2003 ECONOMICS CHALLENGE

On April 8, 2003, the Hawaii Council on Economic Education held the third annual State Competition of the NCEE/Goldman Sachs Foundation 'Economics Challenge' at the University of Hawaii. Three local high schools, consisting of thirteen teams, competed in the competition.

The Economics Challenge is a student competition designed to increase their understanding of and interest in economics and finance. During initial rounds, students tackled fun and challenging written tests of their economic understanding and their reasoning ability. The final rounds of the State Economics Challenge involved a "first-to-the-buzzer" format as teams answered tough questions on complex economic concepts and theories involving micro- and macroeconomics, international economics, and current events.

Hawaii's first place winners received $100 savings bonds, an all-expense paid trip to San Francisco, and invites to the 2003 Stephen L. Jackstadt Award Dinner honoring U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka.

The two first place teams traveled to San Francisco in April to compete in the Western Regional Competition of the Challenge. The Adam Smith team of Patrick Morissey, Chase Tajima, Hong Zhe Sun, and Josh Sato, just missed making the quiz bowl round by 10 points (that's just a single question) and finished third in their division. However, Council Member, Richie Kibota's Team, consisting of Yuan Gao, Christine Tasato, Chris Iraha, and Jerrene Takeuchi, took first place in the David Ricardo division, winning $1000 savings bonds and an all expense paid trip to New York City to compete in the National Economics Challenge May 17 - 19, 2003.

At the National Competition, Richie's David Ricardo team placed fourth -- quite an accomplishment, since the preliminary rounds began with more than 3600 students on over 900 teams participating in 28 state and four regional competitions!
