Island Insurance Companies Economics Challenge Economics Challenge | EconChallenge ONLINE 2005 ECONOMICS CHALLENGE Student teams from nine Hawaii high schools battled it out on Monday, March 28, 2005, to win their respective divisions and the title of State Champions in the Island Insurance Companies 2005 Hawaii Economics Challenge.
The Economics Challenge, hosted by the Hawaii Council on Economic Education, is a student competition designed to increase their understanding of and interest in economics and finance. During initial rounds, students tackled fun and challenging written tests of their economic understanding and their reasoning ability. The final rounds of the State Economics Challenge involved a "first-to-the-buzzer" format as teams answered tough questions on complex economic concepts and theories involving micro- and macroeconomics, international economics, and current events.
Iolani teams won both divisions of the competition and each student received a $50 savings bond. Four students from each team went on an all-expense paid trip to San Francisco, CA to compete in the Western Regional competition against champions from Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, Utah, and Washington State.
Many thanks to Island Insurance Companies and AIG Insurance for funding travel scholarships to Neighbor Island Schools. | SCHOOL | COACH(ES) | Hana High School Iolani School Kaimuki High School Kalani High School Kamehameha Schools Kauai High School Maryknoll School Maui High School Nanakuli High School | Ward Mardfin Richie Kibota, Dick Rankin Brian Tsutsui Mike Zane Dee Mecham Edwin Sawyer Lance Suzuki Shane Okamoto Dennis Tynan | | | | | Ricardo Division Winners | Smith Division Winners | | 1st Place - Iolani School | 1st Place - Iolani School | - Alison Olmstead
