Island Insurance Companies Economics Challenge Economics Challenge | EconChallenge ONLINE 2007 ECONOMICS CHALLENGE Student teams from eight Hawaii high schools battled it out on Thursday, April 5, 2007, to win their respective divisions and the title of State Champions in the Island Insurance Companies 2007 Hawaii Economics Challenge.
The Economics Challenge, hosted by the Hawaii Council on Economic Education, is a student competition designed to increase their understanding of and interest in economics and finance. During initial rounds, students tackled fun and challenging written tests of their economic understanding and their reasoning ability. The final rounds of the State Economics Challenge involved a "first-to-the-buzzer" format as teams answered tough questions on complex economic concepts and theories involving micro- and macroeconomics, international economics, and current events. Iolani teams won both divisions of the competition and each student received a $50 savings bond. Four students from each team won an all-expense paid trip to San Francisco, CA to compete in the Western Regional competition against state champions from Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, Utah, and Washington State.
Many thanks to Island Insurance Companies for funding travel scholarships to Neighbor Island Schools to attend the event.

Iolani School won both divisions at the Regional Competition in California. This is the first time in th history of the Competition that the same school has won both divisions two years in a row!
Note on the National Competition from Coach Dick Rankin at Iolani School....
In a very close Buzzer round, Iolani School representing Hawaii and the Western Region defeated Minnesota to win the National Economics Championship in the Ricardo (NON AP) Division of the Goldman Sachs National Economics Challenge.
With the score tied 8-8, Iolani pulled away at the end to win by three points in a very exciting and nail-biting (according to Coach Richie Kibota) final buzzer round. The team of Yoichi Sagawa, Cody Silva, Evan Kam, and Thanh Vu had led throughout the written competition. Coach Kibota attributed the win to lots of hard work by all team members. Soon after the competition, Evan Kam was seen on national TV (Bloomberg Network) with the president of the National Council on Economic Education, Dr. Bob Duvall. Evan also attributed the win to lost of hard work.
Iolani also had a team at the Nationals representing Hawaii and the Western Region in the Adam Smith Division (AP). In fact, Hawaii was the only state to have both regional winners from the same state, let alone the same school. The team of Marisa Ideta, Jonah Yuen, Alex Chun, and Nate Yang gave it their best and were tied for second after the first two rounds. The completed the competition placing fourth in the nation. Iolani School can be proud of both teams!
